The Nigerian government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, announced the suspension on Twitter through the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture’s account.
In a statement made in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension, citing the platform’s continued usage for actions that threaten Nigeria’s business survival.
The Federal Government has also asked the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to begin the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria as soon as possible, according to the Minister.
The statement read;
The Federal Government has suspended, indefinitely, the operations of the microblogging and social networking service, Twitter, in Nigeria.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed,
announced the suspension in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are
capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.
The Minister said the Federal Government has also directed the National Broadcasting l Commission (NBC) to immediately commence the process of licensing all OTT and social media operations in Nigeria.
This comes after Buhari’s tweet was deleted by Twitter, in which he threatened to deal with “misbehaving” groups in “the language they understand,” alluding to Nigeria’s civil conflict.
The internet company defended its actions by claiming that the President’s tweet broke its guidelines.
