Soldiers barred vendors at the timber and building materials marketplaces in Orlu, Imo state, from opening for the day’s business, according to a story in The Punch daily.
According to the report, most of the traders in the two marketplaces refused to open their businesses on Monday, July 26 in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The military, who were stationed near Orlu’s two main markets, forbade the traders from doing any commercial activity in their shops. It’s unclear whether the troops’ actions were in response to the traders’ boycott of their stores the day before.
The troops ordered the gatemen at the entrances to the two large marketplaces not to open the gates, according to some traders quoted in the story.
While the military continued their stop-and-search operation in front of the two markets, the traders were left stranded because they were unable to obtain access to the facility.
Below is the quote from one of the traders:
We didn’t even get into the markets because the gates to the building materials and Timber Market were under lock and key. The soldiers told us that we won’t be allowed to open shop till further notice.
